L’estate è al capolinea: fino a quando possiamo innaffiare i cactus e le piante succulente?

L’argomento è un classico e la domanda è tra le più frequenti in assoluto tra i coltivatori di cactus e succulente: fino a quando posso innaffiare le mie piante? In altre parole, posto che  – come anche i coltivatori meno esperti sanno – è opportuno tenere al freddo e all’asciutto i cactus durante i mesi invernali, fino a quando si possono innaffiare (o annaffiare: entrambi i termini sono considerati corretti in lingua italiana) le cactacee e quando esattamente dobbiamo sospendere le bagnature? E ancora: le innaffiature vanno sospese completamente o dovranno solo essere diradate? Ci sono cactacee che possono o devono essere annaffiate anche in autunno e in inverno? Ci sono piante succulente non cactacee, in particolare quelle a foglia, che vanno bagnate anche nei mesi invernali, pena l’avvizzimento di rami e foglie? 

E’ chiaro che una parte della risposta a queste domande può variare a seconda del luogo in cui coltiviamo le piante (c’è una grossa differenza, giusto per fare un esempio, tra la Riviera ligure, la Sicilia e il Trentino, oppure stati come la Gran Bretagna, la Spagna o la Germania), ma in linea di massima si può dire che esistono molti punti fermi che ogni coltivatore deve conoscere e rispettare per far sì che le sue succulente crescano sane e robuste e fioriscano copiosamente. Soprattutto, vi sono alcuni punti fermi che vanno rispettati per evitare, molto semplicemente, di far marcire i nostri cactus e le nostre piante grasse durante l’inverno o all’inizio della primavera. E dal momento che il periodo in cui la maggior parte delle cactacee e delle succulente andrà in stasi vegetativa si avvicina, è il caso di approfondire questi punti fermi e imparare a distinguere quantomeno le macro-esigenze idriche delle varie famiglie di succulente.

Quello delle annaffiature (o innaffiature, sebbene il primo termine sia oggi di uso più comune) è tuttora uno dei temi più dibattuti tra chi si approccia alla coltivazione di cactus e piante grasse in generale. Quanta acqua vogliono i cactus? Quando vanno annaffiate le piante succulente? Ogni quanto vanno bagnate le piante grasse?

Quelle riportate in apertura sono solo alcune delle domande più ricorrenti – e sorvolo, per ovvi motivi, su un’altra domanda che ho sentito spesso porre: “Ma i cactus vanno annaffiati?”.
Come ogni essere vivente, le piante succulente hanno bisogno di acqua. Come, quanto e quando annaffiare dipende da molti fattori, come il periodo dell’anno, la zona in cui ci si trova (Nord o Sud Italia, ad esempio?), le temperature, l’umidità ambientale, i substrati che si utilizzano, la grandezza dei vasi, e altro ancora.
