E’ arrivata proprio dai cactus l’ispirazione per produrre idrogeno a costi più sostenibili

Che i cactus siano un piccolo miracolo della Natura, da un punto di vista “evoluzionistico” e per quanto concerne l’ingegnosità delle piante, è un fatto noto a chiunque abbia approfondito un minimo le caratteristiche e le capacità di questa famiglia botanica. Il loro modo di accumulare riserve idriche, di adattarsi a condizioni estreme e di escogitare soluzioni “creative” per far fronte alle avversità insite nei loro luoghi di origine è unico e sofisticato. In una parola, affascinante. E come spesso accade, l’uomo osserva la Natura e ne trae spunto per ricavare soluzioni a problemi o, semplicemente, per tentare di migliorare la propria condizione. Un curioso caso che segue queste dinamiche è stato recentemente riportato da alcuni siti internazionali specializzati e riguarda la produzione di idrogeno, che proprio grazie ai cactus, sebbene indirettamente, potrebbe rivelarsi economicamente più abbordabile.

Scoperta nuova specie di cactus: “Copiapoa invisibilis”! Le eccezionali foto di una pianta… che non esiste più

A scanso di equivoci: il titolo è ironico e qui si parla di marciume, purtroppo. Nessuna nuova Copiapoa è stata scoperta e tantomeno lo è quella che vedete in questa foto e nelle incredibili immagini all’interno di questo articolo. Semplicemente, questo è quel che rimane di una mia Copiapoa cinerea marcita questo inverno senza che nemmeno me ne accorgessi. Quello che vedere altro non è se non l’armatura di spine che la pianta mi ha lasciato. Gli aculei sono talmente compatti e ravvicinati da mantenere perfettamente la forma della pianta (con tanto di fiore secco all’apice). Il fusto, semplicemente, non esiste più. E’ marcito ed è “evaporato”, sparito.

Ecco cosa è successo e, soprattutto, ecco le eccezionali foto di questa pianta, la cui sorte, peraltro, tocca di tanto in tanto anche agli esemplari in habitat, come mi è capitato di vedere in alcune foto online e una volta, direttamente, con un giovane esemplare di Ferocactus in occasione di un mio viaggio in Messico. Secondo uno studio di “Nature Plants” i cactus sono le piante più esposte a rischio estinzione

Cactaceae (cactus), una famiglia di piante del Nuovo Mondo, è uno dei gruppi di organismi più a rischio di estinzione del pianeta“. L’assunto è tranchant ma la fonte, purtroppo, è attendibile, dal momento che il passaggio è tratto da un estratto di uno studio pubblicato da Nature Plants, rivista scientifica pubblicata da Nature Publishing Group. Lo studio è stato pubblicato nell’aprile del 2022 con il titolo “Elevato rischio di estinzione dei cactus a causa dei cambiamenti climatici”. Può sembrare un paradosso, dal momento che alcune cactacee stanno adattandosi a climi non propriamente ideali, come quelli che caratterizzano le Alpi Svizzere, come ho riportato in un precedente articolo. Purtroppo è tutto connesso, collegato e conseguente al cambiamento climatico.

Echinopsis Haku-jo, il cactus dalle origini misteriose: non esiste in natura ma spopola in commercio

E’ un po’ come quel lontano parente schivo e riservato: in famiglia tutti sanno che c’è, ma di lui, della sua storia, si sa poco o nulla. Chi coltiva cactus e piante succulente, chi è abituato a frequentare mostre-mercato di piante grasse, chi bazzica vivai ben riforniti, ne ha certamente osservato più di un esemplare. Molti appassionati ne hanno uno o più esemplari nella loro collezione di cactacee. Eppure, di questo Echinopsis Haku-jo si sa ben poco. Nei tanti testi dedicati alle cactacee (non solo in lingua italiana) la pianta compare spesso in fotografia ma le informazioni sono sempre scarne; online si trovano solo brevi schede sintetiche, quasi sempre a corredo degli esemplari in vendita. Per il resto, nulla. La storia di questa cultivar (pianta non esistente in natura ma ottenuta attraverso ibridazione e incroci da parte dell’uomo) resta avvolta nel mistero.

In questo articolo cerco di riassumere quello che ho imparato in anni di coltivazione e ciò che sono riuscito a sapere di questa intrigante cultivar di Echinopsis, la cui fioritura è tra le più bizzarre in tutta la famiglia delle cactacee (…).

Strane combinazioni della Natura: come ci è finito un onzuka nel vaso di un vecchio Thelocactus?

Quando si coltivano molte piante in uno spazio relativamente ristretto come può essere quello offerto da una serra (per quanto capiente), può capitare spesso di scoprire gradite soprese nei vasi. I cactus i cui fiori sono stati impollinati naturalmente dagli insetti o i cactus autofertili, in grado di fare tutto da soli, producono frutti, che una volta secchi si spaccano lasciando cadere i semi direttamente sul terriccio alla base della pianta. E’ così che ci si può trovare con esemplari di una certa età contornati da semenzali o piantine di piccole dimensioni, in una sorta di riproposizione “in vaso” di ciò che avviene comunemente in natura. A dispetto di quello che si potrebbe pensare osservando le precise procedure necessarie per la riproduzione dei cactus, la semina spontanea è un fenomeno comune nelle cactacee e talvolta è in grado di regalare vere e proprie sorprese, come è capitato a me in questi giorni.
